As a BzzAgent, I received a digital copy of Oliver Potzsch's novel "The Hangman's Daughter" and also the sequel "The Dark Monk." I have just started reading "The Hangman's Daughter" this week! So far, I must say that I love it! It is a historical fiction novel that is set in 1660 Germany! The main characters are Jakob, the town executioner, Magdalena, his daughter, and Simon, the town physician. Here is the description that was provided by BzzAgent.
The story: Germany, 1660: When a dying boy is pulled from the river with a mark crudely tattooed on his shoulder, hangman Jakob Kuisl - whose wisdom and empathy are as unusual as his despised profession - is called upon to investigate whether witchcraft is at play.
Magdalena, the hangman's clever and headstrong daughter, is destined to be married off to another hangman's son — except that the town physician's son is hopelessly in love with her. After the gruesomely injured boy is pulled from the river, the villagers suspect local midwife Martha Stechlin. Jakob Kuisl is charged with extracting a confession and torturing her until he gets one. Convinced she is innocent, he, Magdalena, and her would-be suitor to race against the clock to find the true killer.
